The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development OECD compared 72 cities with regard to their integration politics; we can read in the Austrian news of these days. Together with six other major cities Vienna scores quite well. Not too much spatial segregation, comprehensive programmes for newly arrived citizens and a wide range of initiatives for migrants are mentioned on the plus side.
This might also be thanks to the fact that Vienna is not just a city, but also has the advantage of being a province – this “double” money makes it easier for the administration to dedicate budgets for integration. On the negative side, unemployment of immigrants is mentioned. So that will be one of the greatest challenges for Vienna – to support migrants in finding a job, a qualified job for a good living.
