It is the generation aged 25 and younger who feel most European, we were told in the weeks prior to the European elections. But what about their participation in EU decision making? From 748 Member of the European Parliament only one was aged younger than 30! The average member age in the institution was 56 years. And on the other hand there are the many young people who never go to an election. So what can be done? Young volunteers might be an answer. Those who engage in voluntary work – if supported adequately – might be able and willing to represent their generation also in decision making.
